Her installations expand upon the tradition of Chinese landscape painting, using cut wood panels arranged like drifting landmasses, waterfalls, or petals. Blending pattern, texture, and symbolism. She purposefully arranges the shapes to emulate Chinese landscape composition because as Li has said, “the ancient painters see different landscapes through the passage of time…and the paintings do not have a visual focal point.”  Li’s installation Dreamland is abstract yet there are moments of familiarity depicted in the stylized water drops and wavey forms. She pushes the abstraction even further by using patterns and textures to adorn the elements.

Li’s work explores themes of identity, femininity, memory, and place.
