I like my own poster titled “Ba People & Group". Because this poster is relatively pictographic, the main graphic resembling both a smiling person and an abstract "animal" symbol. This is the underlying meaning of the graphic. In fact, it is a transformation of the seal script of the word "Ba", representing Ba people. The small graphic symbols depict scenes of Ba group’s livelihoods, originating from the patterns on bronze artifacts unearthed in Dazhou. 1. Can you please briefly introduce yourself and your journey as a designer?
Answer: I am a teacher engaged in design education from a university in Sichuan. I have accumulated 18 years of experience in this field. I started studying visual communication design in my college, formerly known as graphic design, and worked as a designer assistant at an international trade company in Shenzhen for a year after graduate school. After that, I have been a college teacher till now. In addition to routine teaching, design practice is also an important part of my work. I have completed many visual design projects for enterprises, local government, and schools, broadening my design horizons and experiences. 2. Is poster design important to you?
Poster design is very important to me, it gives me fun, I can use a variety of graphic languages and design techniques to express my ideas. Another reason why posters are so important is that the poster graphic language is global, and any nation can understand it, and the perspective of communication is very broad. If I have time in my life, I will regularly design and produce some different types of posters to enjoy the fun of poster design and convey the charm of graphics. 3. What role do you believe poster design plays in contemporary visual communication, particularly in addressing social or cultural issues?
Answer: Posters play the role of "communication, exchange, and dissemination" in contemporary visual communication. They serve as a medium for communication and exchange, reflecting the feedback of visual information dissemination and reception. In today's society, poster design permeates creative communication in myriad forms, be it static, dynamic, interactive, or AI-generated, playing a pivotal role. Moreover, posters serve as vital means for cultural propagation, infusing creativity and ingenuity into the cultural dissemination, thereby rendering it both direct and engaging. 4. How does your poster reflect your personal style or design philosophy?
Answer: My poster designs typically employ simple graphics or hand-drawn elements to express creativity and themes. Color palettes are deliberately limited, usually comprising no more than three hues, while intricate textures and image noise embellish the graphics. This is my own style. In terms of design philosophy, I emphasize the association and underlying meaning behind the graphics, aiming for a harmonious fusion of form and meaning, or the use of symbolic methods to express themes. 5. What advice do you have for young designers starting their careers? Are there any suggestions you would offer to those just beginning their journey in design?
Answer: I have four pieces of advice: Firstly, persistence is paramount. Although there are many design practitioners in this industry, survival of the fittest is always the principle. Only through the passage of time can one truly develop skills. Secondly, be a lifelong learner. With the rapid development of society, crossing and integration among the multiple subjects would be an important direction of in-depth study in this field. Staying abreast of cutting-edge developments and continuously refining skills is imperative to avoid obsolescence. Thirdly, always be curious. Good creativity and ideas require inner drive. Without curiosity, you won't be able to go further. Fourthly, believe in yourself.
